Even the highest-quality technical equipment eventually reaches the end of its service life. At Munich Airport, several ageing passenger boarding bridges therefore had to be dismantled and properly disposed of.
Speedlog was commissioned to transport the decommissioned bridges from Munich Airport to a specialised recycling facility in Kassel.
Two Years of Planning for an Exceptional Transport Project
A specialist company was appointed to dismantle and remove the old passenger boarding bridges.
The preliminary planning phase lasted two years. In mid-2024, Speedlog was awarded the contract to transport the dismantled bridges from the airport apron in Munich to a scrapping and recycling facility in Kassel.
The recycling specialist has extensive experience in dismantling large components and ensuring the proper disposal of different materials.
Up to 21 Tonnes and 18.6 Metres in Length
The dimensions of the passenger boarding bridges presented particular challenges for transport planning.
Key transport facts:
-
Cargo: Decommissioned passenger boarding bridges
-
Weight: Up to 21 tonnes
-
Dimensions: 18.6 × 3.8 × 3.7 metres
-
Vehicles: Low loaders with loading bed lengths of up to 19 metres
-
Route: Munich Airport to Kassel
-
Transport duration: Two nights
-
Escort: Mandatory BF3 and BF4 escort vehicles
Due to the exceptional dimensions, an extensive permit approval process was required before transportation could begin.
“When transporting exceptional cargo such as these passenger boarding bridges, every detail matters. Vehicle selection, permits and transport escorts all have to be carefully coordinated.”
– Grigo Simsek
Safely Escorted from Munich to Kassel
Specialised low loaders were used to transport the large airport structures. The mandatory transport escort was provided by BF3 and BF4 vehicles.
The heavy-haulage vehicles completed the journey from Munich Airport to the recycling facility in Kassel over two nights.
The project demonstrates the importance of careful preparation, suitable specialised vehicles and coordinated escort arrangements when transporting oversized industrial and airport equipment.
Speedlog: Expertise in Challenging Heavy Transport Operations
Whether industrial equipment, machinery or exceptionally large components, heavy transport requires detailed planning and the right vehicle technology.
By transporting the decommissioned passenger boarding bridges, Speedlog completed another assignment involving exceptional dimensions and specific permit requirements.
